I want you to write a description for this article. I want it to not exceed 160 characters and to be interesting to the reader.
The Traxxas Hoss 4×4 VXL has long been regarded as one of the top RC cars from Traxxas, and it continues to hold that distinction for several reasons. The first thing that catches everyone’s attention is its striking appearance.
But what about its chassis, performance, and handling? These are all critical factors that play a significant role in determining the success of this RC car.
Additionally, Traxxas is renowned for its powerful monster trucks, like the Traxxas Stampede and Maxx. Both of these trucks have gained widespread popularity among RC enthusiasts, who appreciate their strength and reliability.
This leads to a common question: “Do we really need the Traxxas Hoss when we already have the Stampede and Maxx?”
In this Traxxas Hoss review, I’ll be answering that question.
Stay tuned!

Traxxas Hoss Review: Design Overview

The design of the Traxxas Hoss 4×4 is both striking and aggressive, bearing a resemblance to the Traxxas Maxx. Its robust wheels further enhance its powerful appearance, making the vehicle seem unstoppable.
This monster truck is available in two color schemes: an orange and purple combination, and another featuring green and blue accents. Additionally, the body is reinforced with an internal cage, which not only strengthens the vehicle but also helps maintain its fresh look over time.
Bumpers
The bumpers on the Traxxas Hoss 4×4 VXL are not only visually impressive but also built to withstand impacts during crashes.
Each bumper serves a specific purpose: the front bumper is designed to protect the vehicle, while the rear bumper features small wheels to prevent backflips when launching at full throttle.
Wheels
The Traxxas Hoss is equipped with 2.8″ black chrome wheels wrapped in large 5.3″ Sledgehammer tires. This setup provides excellent traction and durability, ensuring a powerful launch.
These tires are designed to tackle various terrains, including sand, mud, and snow, allowing the RC car to deliver peak performance while ensuring a thrilling and enjoyable experience!

Traxxas Hoss 4×4 VXL Performance Review
The Traxxas Hoss 4×4 VXL lives up to its rugged appearance, performing like a true off-road beast. Thanks to Traxxas’ high-quality components, this RC car is capable of showing its power on virtually any terrain.
Chassis Design

While the body of the Hoss resembles that of the Traxxas Maxx, its chassis is more akin to the Rustler 4×4 in terms of design and components. What’s particularly impressive is how easy it is to access and replace internal parts. With just a few screws, the bulkheads can be quickly removed, making adjustments and repairs much simpler and faster.
Suspension Arms
In a previous article, we discussed the importance of upgrading the arms on the Traxxas Slash due to their tendency to wear out under heavy impact. However, the Hoss is a different story. The suspension arms are robust and constructed from high-quality materials, meaning you won’t need to invest in upgrades. These arms are built to withstand harsh conditions, including cold weather and aggressive driving, so you can push the Hoss to its limits right out of the box.
Shocks
The shocks on the Traxxas Hoss are highly reliable, featuring oil-filled dampers and X-Ring technology. These features allow the Hoss to absorb the impact of big jumps and handle the intense pressures of off-roading, while maintaining smooth performance and durability.
Motor Power

Arguably the most exciting part of the Hoss is its motor. Equipped with a Velineon 540XL 2400 kV motor, the Hoss can reach speeds of over 60 mph (90 km/h). This performance matches the Traxxas Maxx and easily outpaces the Traxxas Stampede, which maxes out at around 30 mph (50 km/h). In a race, the Hoss would leave a Stampede in the dust!
The motor also features Neodymium magnets for heat resistance and high-speed bearings for enhanced performance. Additionally, the 4-pole balanced rotor ensures smoother operation and longer motor life. Paired with the waterproof Velineon VXL-3s speed controller, which includes a cooling fan, the Hoss delivers consistent and powerful performance.

Receiver Box and Channel Receiver
As a fan of Traxxas RC cars, I appreciate the waterproof receiver box, which allows me to take my cars through water without worry. On the Hoss, the receiver box is positioned at the front for better weight distribution and a cleaner chassis design. Additionally, the Hoss comes with a TQi 2.4 GHz receiver, which provides real-time telemetry data sent directly to the TQi Transmitter in your hands.
Battery Compatibility
The recommended battery for the Traxxas Hoss is a 3-cell LiPo, which fits easily near the motor. This battery setup allows the Hoss to deliver its top-tier performance without sacrificing ease of use.
In summary, the Traxxas Hoss 4×4 VXL is a well-rounded, high-performance off-road vehicle that excels in durability, speed, and ease of maintenance. Whether you’re a casual hobbyist or an extreme RC enthusiast, the Hoss is ready to handle whatever you throw at it!
What I Like About the Traxxas Hoss
Up to this point, I’ve mostly highlighted things that have impressed me. In all honesty, I like the Traxxas Hoss just as much as the Traxxas Maxx because I don’t see any significant differences between them.
One standout feature I appreciate—and I think you will too—is that the Hoss is an RTR (Ready-To-Run/Race) RC car, which makes it incredibly convenient.
Now, the real question is: which of the three Traxxas RC cars should you buy—the Maxx, Stampede, or the Hoss?
These models share many similarities, but they also differ in certain key areas. Understanding these differences is crucial for making an informed decision and choosing the one that best suits your needs.
