Traxxas Maxx Review. Is It The Best One? Is It Worth It?

With its cutting-edge design, unmatched durability, and incredible power, the X-Maxx has long been the top choice among RC monster trucks. It dominated the market and remained highly popular until Traxxas introduced the new 1/10 Traxxas Maxx.

This model brings all the innovative features of the original X-Maxx into a more compact Traxxas Mini Maxx. What makes the Maxx stand out is its smaller, lighter build, which is better suited for handling higher-intensity use.

In this review, we’ll explore the key features and everything the Traxxas Maxx has to offer for any RC monster truck enthusiast.

Traxxas Mini Maxx RC car Look

The Traxxas Mini Maxx is built for extreme performance, delivering thrilling driving experiences.

It’s equipped with suspension arms that absorb impacts, reducing the effects of sudden collisions.

One feature I particularly like is the chassis material, which disperses impact forces across the vehicle’s structure to minimize damage.

Additionally, the Maxx features large, threaded aluminum components that enhance suspension damping.

The internal components are the same as those found in larger, heavier machines, ensuring reliable performance. You can confidently push this RC monster truck to its limits every time.

Clip-less Mounting System

Body pins are a common frustration in the RC world. You often end up carrying a bag of spares, as you’re bound to lose one when swapping batteries in the field. While tethered body pins are a great solution, Traxxas took it a step further with the X-Maxx, eliminating them entirely by using a custom locking mechanism. This same system has been carried over to the Maxx.

To remove the body, simply rotate the release tab 90° counterclockwise, grab the leading edge of the catch, and lift it to a vertical position. After that, slide the body slightly backward before lifting the rear and removing it from the vehicle.

Reinstalling the body can be a bit tricky. You’ll need to firmly press the nose down over the chassis to ensure the front c-catch engages with the shock tower brace. Once the front is secure, attaching the rear catch is straightforward.

The X-Maxx system wasn’t without its issues—over time, the reinforcement cage would pull through the Lexan body at the screw mount points, leaving the body unsecured and prone to floating. Traxxas has addressed this by introducing custom-designed washer spacers between the bolt heads and the body, an improved version of the ones we 3D-printed for our X-Maxx.

Additionally, scuff plates have been added to the roof, connecting to the reinforcement cage underneath. At the rear, the deck latch is paired with a plastic tailgate protector that integrates with an internal structure to maintain shape during heavy rollovers.

Traxxas Mini Maxx chassis

Traxxas Maxx

The Traxxas Mini Maxx features a chassis that safeguards its internal components. A backbone structure encloses the driveshaft, providing protection to the vehicle’s essential parts. Additionally, the non-structural front and rear skid plates can be easily replaced as they wear out over time.

Traxxas Maxx Wheels

The built-in wheelie bar enhances acceleration by keeping the vehicle stable and preventing it from flipping over during full-throttle bursts.

Proline wheels are designed to absorb shock from hard landings, and the wheelie bar also serves as a convenient handle, making it easier to carry your Traxxas Maxx wherever you go.

Traxxas Maxx Review: The Performance

The Traxxas X-Maxx is one the most powerful Traxxas so far and comes with a new Velineon®540XL Brushless motor and a 32-bit microprocessor-controlled Velineon VXL-4s system with all-wheel drive in collaboration with the TQi 2.4 GHz radio system, this car can reach speeds of up to +60 mph. And maybe even more with the addition of a single LiPo 4S battery you can check out here. (sold separately)

It is also fully waterproof, unlike the other Traxxas cars where you find that just one piece is waterproof while you should worry about the other parts. You won’t worry anymore with the Traxxas Maxx !

The Traxxas Radio System

The Traxxas Maxx delivers optimal performance, thanks to its TQi 2.4GHz radio system, which provides exceptional control, precision, and an impressive range.

This system is also Traxxas Link-enabled, allowing you to add a wireless module and connect it to the Traxxas Link app on your smartphone.

By doing so, you can fully customize your vehicle’s settings and monitor performance in real-time through telemetry provided by the speed control.

When it comes to any RC monster truck, you want assurance that it can handle anything you throw at it.

Traxxas Stability Management System

The patented Traxxas Stability Management system allows you to harness the vehicle’s 4S power for optimal acceleration while maintaining control.

This system ensures the vehicle stays on course, even if the tires are spinning. It will continue to follow your inputs. You can also fine-tune the level of assistance directly from your transmitter.

The Drivetrain System Technology

A key highlight of the Maxx is its robust drivetrain system. Traxxas has incorporated technology typically found in larger trucks, providing exceptional strength.

This system features wide steel gears working in conjunction with a steel ring and a splined aluminum center driveshaft.

To ensure optimal power distribution from front to rear and keep your Maxx stable on all four wheels, it employs a Torque-Biasing Center Drive.

Self-righting System

On the topic of the self-righting system, we’re not particularly impressed, encountering similar issues as we did with the X-Maxx. To activate the system, you press and hold the red “set” button on top of the transmitter (without touching any other controls), which initiates the process. The truck uses its powerful motor and stabilization gyro to send pulses of torque through the drivetrain and wheels. This causes the truck to rock back and forth, with the wheels slowing down as it tilts upright, then ideally tipping over onto its wheels.

We tested the system on various surfaces, starting with soft grass and moving to more compact dirt and gravel, but couldn’t achieve consistent or reliable results. The only notable finding was that it seemed to perform better when running on 4S power.

What I Like About the Traxxas Maxx

The Traxxas Maxx is undeniably fast right out of the box, with few models able to keep up. However, despite its impressive speed, the truck comes at a high price. That said, its build quality is outstanding, making it incredibly durable.

One benefit is the strong support network. Traxxas offers excellent customer service, and spare parts are easy to find. Plus, with a large community of enthusiasts, modifying, repairing, or maintaining your truck is always manageable.

What I Dislike About the Traxxas Maxx

While the Traxxas Maxx is an impressive RC truck, there are a few areas where it could improve. One limitation is that it restricts the use of aftermarket batteries, which might be a downside for those looking to customize their setup.

For the price, it would have been nice to see bead lock wheels included, but fortunately, replacing the wheels and hubs is a straightforward process.

Additionally, if you want to upgrade the power or performance, you’ll need an adapter plate, as the stock setup might feel underpowered for some users.
