In my opinion, many off-road Traxxas trucks tend to share a similar look, from the Traxxas Slash Ford Raptor to the X-Maxx, all resembling rugged pickup trucks with a powerful stance.
However, the Rustler takes a different approach. Its aggressive design, wide body, low stance, and distinctive wheels make it a truly special RC car and one of the most recognizable trucks in the RC world.

The Design

Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL Body
As mentioned earlier, the design of this car is what captivates me the most, and I think it might catch your eye as well.
One thing I particularly appreciate about the Traxxas Rustler 4X4 VXL is the vibrant graphics and colors that adorn its body.
Although the front grille, headlights, and windows are non-functional (a feature I generally dislike in RC cars), they still contribute to the truck’s overall appealing appearance. Of course, you can always opt for aftermarket upgrades to enhance the experience.
Another feature I admire in the newer Traxxas models is the clipless body design, which the company has been incorporating into their latest RC cars.
Instead of dealing with the hassle of removing four clips like in the Slash or the new Drag Slash, you only need to release one clip with a single click, making it incredibly easy to remove the entire body.
Additionally, the body is impressively lightweight, which enhances this Traxxas model’s agility and speed on the road. This is further complemented by the powerful front bumper, flexible and smooth shocks, sturdy arms, and large 2.8” black chrome wheels. In short, this car is a real stunner!

Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL Chassis

The Traxxas Rustler shares the same platform as the Traxxas Slash 4X4, which is a great feature since the Slash 4X4 is known for its durability and handling.
Its chassis is 20mm longer than that of the Traxxas 4X4 Stampede, providing better stability and control. The chassis is also easy to open, allowing convenient access to the car’s internal components. Even better, it features additional spots for tuning if you enjoy customizing your RC car.
That said, one downside of this platform is the prevalence of plastic parts, which is a common issue with most Traxxas models. These plastic components are prone to breaking under aggressive use and may limit the truck’s full potential.
However, some of Traxxas’s other models, such as the Maxx and X-Maxx, come with aluminum parts, which offer improved durability.
In the end, though, it all comes down to getting what you pay for!
Traxxas Rustler 4X4 VXL Review: Performance
I personally favor the 4×4 Traxxas RC cars over the 2WD models for a few reasons. As the name suggests, the Traxxas Rustler 4X4 VXL is a 4×4 vehicle, making its powerful performance all the more thrilling to experience.
However, this doesn’t mean the 2WD version is inferior. It’s simply a matter of personal preference. In fact, some people prefer the 2WD version due to its own set of advantages and drawbacks.

The Motor
This RC car is equipped with a Velineon 3500kV sensorless brushless motor, capable of reaching speeds of up to 65 mph when paired with a 3s Lipo battery. It also features the VXL-3s™ Waterproof Electronic Speed Control, offering three driving modes: sport, race, and training. It’s more powerful than the Traxxas Slash 2WD Ford RAPTOR we reviewed earlier.
The Shocks and Other Parts
The Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL comes with decent plastic shocks, which, while prone to breaking, are still suitable for beginners who are just getting familiar with how the car operates.
However, once you start pushing the car to its limits—like attempting high jumps—those plastic parts, including the shocks and driveshafts, may start to break. That’s why it’s recommended to upgrade some of the plastic components to aluminum.

Traxxas Stability Management
Like other Traxxas models such as the Maxx, the Rustler 4×4 VXL is equipped with a Stability Management system. This system prevents the car from veering off course by adjusting the direction of the wheels. It makes driving easier and enhances control, though you can turn it off if you prefer a wilder experience.
What I Like About the Rustler 4×4 VXL
So far, the features of the Traxxas Rustler 4X4 VXL are impressive. But there are even more exciting elements that can elevate your experience.
Self-Righting
Believe it or not, the Traxxas Rustler 4X4 VXL can flip back onto its wheels effortlessly when it lands upside down! No more chasing after your RC car to right it—just toggle the accelerator back and forth, and it will flip over automatically, similar to the Traxxas Maxx.
Wheelie Bar
The rear spoiler is fitted with small wheels designed to prevent the car from flipping over during acceleration. While these wheels may be small, they serve a significant purpose!

What I Don’t Like About the Traxxas Rustler 4X4 VXL

Additionally, the stock plastic components aren’t the most durable, a common issue among Traxxas RC vehicles. However, this can be remedied by upgrading to aftermarket parts, which can significantly enhance the Rustler’s strength and durability.
