The Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL is among the top-performing and most durable RC cars that Traxxas has ever produced. Much like the popular Slash, its power and performance make it feel like an incredible value for many enthusiasts.
Check out our full review of the Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL here.
The stock components of this RC car are reliable and offer great handling, which is why the Rustler stands out as one of Traxxas’ exceptional models.
That said, many people enjoy upgrading their RC cars—not just after assembly, but even during the process—to enhance their experience and have more fun!
With that in mind, today I’ll walk you through the top 10 easy upgrades to consider for your Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL.
GTR Shocks: Key Upgrades for the Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL
Shocks play a crucial role in supporting the vehicle and absorbing impacts from rough terrain, which is especially important when driving on challenging surfaces.
One issue with the stock shocks that come with the Rustler is their subpar handling. When the vehicle is under significant pressure, the stock shocks may struggle to maintain speed and stability—this becomes even more evident if you’ve already added other upgrades to the vehicle.
Upgrading to solid aluminum GTR shocks can significantly improve the vehicle’s stability, allowing it to maintain balance on even the roughest roads. This upgrade will make controlling your Traxxas Rustler much easier, alleviating the challenges you may face with the stock parts.
Shock Springs
It’s important to note that GTR shocks do not come with springs, and the stock springs are not compatible with them. However, this isn’t a major issue, as you can easily find compatible springs for your new GTR shocks.
These springs are affordable and simple to install, so there’s no need to worry about this aspect.

A-Arms
In addition to upgrading your GTR shocks, it’s essential to consider replacing the A-arms, as they play a key role in the vehicle’s durability and handling.
It’s advisable to replace the stock A-arms as soon as possible due to their vulnerability. Let me explain…
The A-arms are positioned directly beneath the shocks. Since the shocks are responsible for absorbing the pressure from high speeds and rough terrain, the A-arms also endure similar stress.
Moreover, the A-arms are crucial for maintaining a strong connection between the vehicle and its wheels.
Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL Tires
So far, we’ve discussed three interconnected components: the GTR shocks, the A-arms, and the tires. While upgrading one part doesn’t necessarily mean you need to replace the others, it’s often better to ensure all components are at a similar performance level, especially since these parts are relatively inexpensive.
You don’t necessarily have to replace your Rustler’s tires right away, as there isn’t a significant difference between the stock tires and aftermarket options.
However, keep in mind that tire replacement is inevitable over time, depending on how aggressively you drive your Rustler. This is normal, as tires endure the most pressure of all the vehicle’s components.
Plus, upgrading your tires is simply cool! You know what I mean…
Wheelie Bar Wheels
Upgrading the wheelie bar wheels is one of the quickest and easiest modifications you can make to your Rustler 4×4 VXL.
These small wheels are located at the back of the vehicle to prevent it from flipping over due to high acceleration.
Aftermarket wheelie bar wheels tend to be larger and come in a cool blue color. To install them, simply unscrew the stock wheels and replace them with the new ones. It’s that easy. Congratulations!
The Cooling Fan
Upgrading to a cooling fan is a smart move, even if it’s not absolutely necessary. If you’re running your Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL for extended periods, having a cooling fan for the ESC (Electronic Speed Control) helps lower temperatures and ensures optimal power flow when driving at full speed.
Installation is straightforward—no need to unscrew anything. Simply plug the cooling fan into the Velineon VXL-3s ESC, connect the power, and you’re good to go!
The Telemetry Expander
This is my favorite upgrade. The telemetry expander allows you to track your vehicle’s performance and monitor important metrics like speed, temperature, and even GPS location. Isn’t that awesome?
Installing this upgrade on the Traxxas Rustler 4×4 VXL involves three steps: first, mount it on the vehicle, then install it on the controller, and finally, pair the controller with your phone using the Traxxas app via Bluetooth.
This upgrade gives you comprehensive data on your Rustler 4×4 VXL, helping you monitor its condition and extend its lifespan.
One thing I’m not entirely sure about: on the Traxxas XO-1, this upgrade supposedly unlocks additional motor performance, allowing for higher speeds. Does this apply to the Traxxas Rustler VXL 4×4 as well? I’m not certain, but I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
The Steering Servo
The steering servo controls your vehicle’s turning. A stronger servo improves your ability to steer the Rustler and enhances response time.
When installing a new servo, ensure everything is properly centered, including your controller. Keep in mind that changing the servo can be tricky, so I’ve included a video tutorial to guide you through the process step by step

The Drive Shafts
Driveshafts are crucial in both RC and real cars, as they transfer torque and power from the motor to the wheels, making your Rustler move!
The issue with stock driveshafts is their plastic construction. While they work, upgrading to steel driveshafts provides better durability and safety.
Be careful during the installation process, as the rear driveshafts differ from the front ones. Make sure you’re putting each in the correct position.
The Spoiler
If you’re more concerned with aesthetics than technical upgrades, the spoiler is a great choice for you!
To install the spoiler, simply pick your preferred color, unscrew a few internal body screws to remove the old one, and attach the new spoiler. Even for beginners, this process takes less than 5 minutes.
There are three color options available on Amazon for you to choose from:
