Top Traxxas X-Maxx Upgrades You Should Add Right Now!

Upgrading your Traxxas X-Maxx isn’t something you need to overthink—you just have to do it! Not because the stock X-Maxx is lacking (which couldn’t be further from the truth), but because these upgrades will make driving it exponentially more fun.

I’ve already reviewed the Traxxas X-Maxx before (check out the review here), and I witnessed firsthand how powerful this RC car is. In my opinion, it’s the best model Traxxas has ever produced!

Adding some upgrades, however, will take the fun and excitement to the next level. Most importantly, it will make your X-Maxx stand out from the crowd. After all, if you’re investing in a high-end car like this, you’re likely looking for something unique.

These upgrades don’t have to be all about performance—like upgrading the battery or servos—especially if you’re not into the technical side of things. They can be more about aesthetics, such as color customization or adding spoilers.

In this article, I’ll share the top 5 Traxxas X-Maxx upgrades you should consider for 2024…

Traxxas X-Maxx Tires

Let’s begin with the tires, as they endure a significant amount of stress both during regular driving and when executing extreme jumps with the X-Maxx.

I know many Traxxas RC car enthusiasts enjoy pushing their vehicles to the limit, which places even more strain on various internal components, including the wheels.

Unfortunately, the stock tires aren’t particularly durable, and you could end up damaging them within less than an hour of driving your X-Maxx.

Another major issue with these tires is that they tend to stretch out during high-speed driving. With a large, fast, and costly RC car like the X-Maxx, this can potentially cause severe damage.

Here are some excellent tire options I recommend from Amazon:

Wheel Nuts

While we’re on the subject of tires, it’s equally important to mention the wheel nuts, which securely fasten the tires to your X-Maxx. These small but crucial components are designed to handle more pressure than the stock nuts.

Additionally, they can enhance the appearance of your RC car, as they come in a variety of colors that can be easily matched to your X-Maxx’s body.

The X-Maxx Body

If, like me, you enjoy regularly updating the look of your RC car, I’d suggest considering a new body for your Traxxas X-Maxx.

There are many different color options available, making it fun and easy to give your X-Maxx a fresh new appearance.

Shocks

Traxxas X-Maxx Upgrades

As you know, this isn’t a lightweight RC car like the Slash or the Bandit—it’s both heavy and fast. With these factors combined, one of the most critical components, besides the wheels, that keeps the vehicle off the ground is the shocks.

Given the high speed, significant weight, and possibly aggressive driving—especially with large jumps—the shocks need to be robust enough to handle the immense pressure. Let me tell you, if you’re still using the stock shocks, they’ll likely break under these conditions!

So, if you know what I’m talking about, it’s time to upgrade to aftermarket aluminum shocks. The great thing is they come in various colors too. Here are some of my recommendations from Amazon:

Traxxas X-Maxx Stub Axle

Traxxas X-Maxx Upgrades

When you upgrade a component in your Traxxas or any other RC car, keep in mind that improving one part can sometimes weaken other related components. It’s important to be aware of this.

A good example of this is the relationship between the stub axle and the shocks. The stub axle connects the wheels to the rest of the RC car body, meaning it also bears a significant amount of pressure.

If you’re upgrading only the shocks and not the stub axles, you’re creating an imbalance between the two components in terms of power and durability.

To ensure everything handles the stress properly, it’s wise to upgrade to aluminum stub axles too. Here are some that I found on Amazon for you:

There are plenty of other Traxxas X-Maxx upgrades available, but I believe these are the most essential, easy, and straightforward for improving both the look and protection of your X-Maxx.
